Anja Tchadieukeu Nwawe began sewing in summer 2016. After watching lots of YouTube videos, she found an enthusiasm for sewing, and especially upcycling and using cloth that cried out for a second life. With time she started to craft vibrant and colourful bags from denim jeans and curtains, experimenting with designs, making unique and highly functional tote bags with several pockets and that are often reversible. Having made bags for friends and family, Anja decided it was time to show the world her creations and launched her own shop selling items at West Norwood Feast where she made connections who directed her to GLOWS. There she found support, encouragement and a positive community who all help each other and learn from their shared experience together.
Naming her shop, Anja focused on those things that are important to her, namely her husband and silent partner Ledoux, who supported and encouraged her to start the business and their home in SE27.
While at the London Upcycling Show in 2019, Anja gave an interview, telling her story which we are delighted to share here.
Where can you buy Anja’s unique and individually styled tote bags?
As a maker based in South London in Lambeth, much of the interest in her bags is local but she also wanted to reach out to a wider audience seeing the potential of demonstrating how we can use what we have to create functional and beautiful items and so launched her online shop on Etsy.
You can also purchase directly from LedanjaSE27 by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or messaging through the Instagram page.
